What is non-surgical spinal decompression?

Non-surgical spinal decompression, also called spinal decompression therapy, uses gentle, computer-controlled traction to take pressure off the discs and nerves in your spine. Because the goal is to relieve pressure inside the disc, you may also see it called disc decompression. Instead of surgery, it slowly stretches the spine so a damaged disc has room to draw back toward its normal position.

The discs in your spine are soft cushions between the vertebrae. When one is injured, its inner material can push outward and press on a nearby nerve. That pressure is what often causes back pain, neck pain, or pain that travels into an arm or leg. Decompression addresses that mechanical cause directly, without injections or medication.

How spinal decompression works at our Lakewood Ranch office

During a session, you rest comfortably on a decompression table while a computer-controlled system applies a slow, repeating stretch to the targeted part of your spine. As the vertebrae are gently separated, negative pressure forms inside the disc. That pressure helps draw displaced disc material inward, away from the nerve, and pulls water, oxygen, and nutrients back into the disc to support healing.

Research published through the National Library of Medicine describes this negative-pressure mechanism, and notes that the computerized feedback in modern systems keeps the surrounding muscles relaxed in a way a basic traction table cannot. References are listed at the end of this article.

At our Lakewood Ranch office on Gatewood Drive, decompression is performed on a Doc Decompression table and guided by the Kennedy Decompression Technique, a clinical protocol that Dr. Cynthia Hornback is certified in. The technique sets the angle, force, and timing for your specific condition, and we select the decompression system at each office to match the conditions it treats. Sessions run up to 15 minutes, and the treatment is computer-controlled, non-surgical, and free of injections and medication.

Conditions spinal decompression therapy can address

Spinal decompression is most often used for problems that begin with a disc or a compressed nerve. At Hornback Chiropractic and Wellness in Lakewood Ranch, it may be recommended for:

Herniated discs in the lower back (lumbar) or neck (cervical)
Bulging discs
Sciatica caused by nerve compression in the lower back
Disc-related back pain
Neck pain with symptoms that radiate into the shoulder or arm
Degenerative disc disease

If your symptoms point to one of these, the next step is an evaluation to confirm whether decompression is appropriate. You can read more on our sciatica treatment and disc herniation pages.

How decompression compares to other options

When you have disc or nerve pain, your doctor may discuss several approaches. The right choice depends on your diagnosis, and decompression is often paired with chiropractic adjustments. The table below is a general comparison, not medical advice.

Comparison of spinal decompression with other approaches to disc and nerve pain
Approach Invasiveness Anesthesia or incision Medication What it targets
Non-surgical spinal decompression Low, non-surgical No No Mechanical pressure on the disc and nerve
Spinal surgery, such as microdiscectomy High Yes Often Removes or repairs disc material surgically
Epidural steroid injection Moderate Injection Yes, a steroid Inflammation around the nerve
Oral pain medication Low No Yes Pain signals, not the underlying disc
Chiropractic adjustment alone Low No No Joint motion and alignment

What to expect at our Lakewood Ranch office

1
A thorough evaluation
Your doctor reviews your history and symptoms and, when it helps, takes imaging to see what is happening in your spine.
2
A plan tailored to your condition
If decompression is a good fit, the doctor builds a plan tailored to your condition, including how many sessions you may need and how they are spaced.
3
Comfortable, supported sessions
You stay comfortably positioned and supported while the table does the work, and each session runs up to 15 minutes. Decompression often works best alongside other care, such as chiropractic adjustments, SoftWave® therapy, and guided exercises that support the spine between visits.
4
Progress over a series of visits
Most patients notice changes over a series of sessions rather than after a single visit, and your doctor will reassess and adjust the plan as you go.

Is spinal decompression therapy right for you in Lakewood Ranch?

Spinal decompression is worth discussing if you have ongoing back or neck pain, pain that travels into a leg or arm, or a disc problem that has not responded to rest or basic care. It is a conservative option for people who want more than adjustments alone but would prefer to avoid surgery.

Decompression is not appropriate for everyone. Certain conditions, recent fractures, advanced osteoporosis, some spinal implants, and pregnancy can make it unsuitable, which is one reason an evaluation comes first. The purpose of that first visit is to determine whether decompression is the right path for you, and to tell you plainly if it is not.

Common misconceptions about spinal decompression

A few things patients often misunderstand:

It is not surgery. There are no incisions, no anesthesia, and no recovery time.
It is not the same as a routine adjustment. An adjustment restores joint motion, while decompression applies sustained, computer-controlled traction aimed at the disc.
One session is not a cure. Decompression works over a planned series of visits, and results build gradually.
It is not only for the lower back. The same approach is used for disc and nerve problems in the neck.
Coverage varies. Advanced services are often not covered by insurance, so it helps to confirm cost up front.

Cost, membership, and insurance

Every decompression plan is built around your specific condition, so the number of sessions, and the cost, are determined after your evaluation. We will walk you through the plan and pricing before you commit.

For ongoing chiropractic care, our Wellness Membership starts at $65 per month for one adjustment per month, and scales up to weekly adjustment plans for patients who need more frequent care. Every membership includes an annual exam and X-rays, and we offer progressive family discounts.

Frequently asked questions

Most patients find it comfortable and even relaxing. The table applies a gentle, gradual stretch while you stay supported, and sessions run up to 15 minutes.
Each session runs up to 15 minutes. The number of sessions and their spacing depend on your condition, and your doctor sets the plan after your evaluation.
They are related, but not the same. A decompression system uses computerized feedback to keep your muscles relaxed and target specific disc levels, which a basic traction table cannot.
It may, when sciatica is caused by a disc pressing on a nerve in the lower back. An evaluation confirms the cause first. You can learn more on our sciatica treatment page.
Decompression is non-surgical and computer-controlled. It is not suitable for some conditions, including recent fractures, advanced osteoporosis, certain implants, and pregnancy, which is why we evaluate every patient first.
No referral is needed to schedule a consultation. Call (941) 744-1585 and we will get you started.
Advanced services like decompression are often not covered by insurance. We are in-network with Aetna, we accept HSA, FSA, cash, and credit cards, and we provide documentation you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
