Headaches & Migraines: What Chiropractic Care Can and Cannot Do

Cervicogenic, tension-type, and migraine headaches are three different problems. Here is which ones respond to chiropractic care, which do not, and which go straight to the emergency room.

Headache Types

Different Headaches Need Different Care

Not all headaches are the same problem, and pretending otherwise is how headache care disappoints people. Tension-type headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and migraines have different sources and respond to different care, and only one of the three originates in the place a chiropractor treats.

This page sorts them out plainly, including what chiropractic care can genuinely help and what it cannot. Hornback Chiropractic Wellness evaluates headache patients at all three offices across Sarasota and Manatee County, and the practice maintains a deeper resource on headache pain and treatment.

Different Headaches

The three common headache types, and where chiropractic fits

Cervicogenic headache: the strongest fit

These headaches originate in the joints and muscles of the upper neck and are felt in the head, often one-sided, frequently starting at the base of the skull, and tracking with neck stiffness, position, and long desk sessions. Because the source is the neck itself, treating the neck is treating the headache, which is why this is the clearest match for chiropractic care.

Tension-type headache: a supportive role

The familiar band-of-pressure headache, often tied to sustained muscle tension, stress, and posture. When a neck and upper-back component shows up on exam, addressing it can be a useful part of managing the pattern, alongside the ergonomic and lifestyle factors feeding it.

Migraine: a complementary role only, stated plainly

Migraine is a neurological condition, and chiropractic care is not a migraine treatment or cure. Managing migraine belongs with your physician. Where care here can contribute: some migraine patients also carry a neck-driven component or find that neck dysfunction is one of their triggers, and an evaluation identifies whether that applies to you. If your headaches are purely migrainous with no cervical component, you will be told exactly that.

Emergency Signs

Which headaches are emergencies?

Most headaches are not medical emergencies, but some can be a sign of a serious underlying condition that requires immediate attention. Chiropractic care is appropriate for many musculoskeletal headaches, but certain symptoms should be evaluated in an emergency department before any conservative treatment is considered.

Go to the emergency room for

A sudden, severe thunderclap headache; the worst headache of your life; headache with fever and a stiff neck; headache with weakness, confusion, vision loss, or trouble speaking; or a new headache pattern following a head injury. New or changing headaches after age 50 warrant prompt medical evaluation as well.

Our Process

How headache care works here

The exam identifies the headache type before anything is treated, because the type determines the plan. History, an exam of the neck’s joints and muscles, and imaging discussion if findings call for it. Cervicogenic and neck-involved tension patterns are addressed with chiropractic adjustment and a plan of care with checkpoints; headaches that began after a car accident are evaluated under the practice’s auto injury care, since post-collision headaches are a common part of whiplash.

And if your headaches are not neck-driven, the right outcome of the exam is a referral in the right direction rather than a plan of care that will not help.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Candidly: chiropractic care is not a migraine cure, and anyone promising one should be avoided. Migraine is a neurological condition best managed with your physician. Where chiropractic care can play a role is complementary: some migraine patients have neck-driven contributors or a coexisting cervicogenic component, and an evaluation identifies whether that applies to you. If it does not, you will hear that plainly.
A headache that originates in the joints and muscles of the upper neck and is felt in the head, often on one side, frequently starting at the base of the skull and tracking with neck position and stiffness. This is the headache type with the clearest connection to chiropractic care, because the source being treated is the neck itself.
Clues include headaches that flare with neck stiffness, long desk sessions, or certain head positions, pain starting at the base of the skull, and a neck that is tender or restricted on exam. The evaluation is what confirms or rules it out.
A sudden, severe thunderclap headache, the worst headache of your life, headache with fever and a stiff neck, headache with weakness, confusion, vision loss, or trouble speaking, or a new headache pattern after a head injury. Those go to the emergency room, not a chiropractic office.
With an exam that identifies the headache type first. Cervicogenic and tension-type patterns with a neck component are addressed by treating the neck: chiropractic adjustment and a plan of care with checkpoints. Migraine patients get a plain account of what care can and cannot contribute, and care is coordinated as a complement to physician management, never a replacement.
