Herniated Disc Treatment

A herniated disc, sometimes called a slipped or ruptured disc, happens when the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes through its tougher outer wall. When that material presses on a nearby nerve, the result is the pattern most patients describe: back or neck pain plus pain, numbness, or tingling radiating into a leg or arm. Many disc herniations improve with conservative care over weeks to months, which is why non-surgical treatment is usually where a fair evaluation starts.

Hornback Chiropractic & Wellness treats disc injuries at all three of its offices, and disc conditions are exactly what the practice’s non-surgical spinal decompression program is built for.

Overview

What does a herniated disc feel like?

It depends on where the herniation is and what it presses on. The common patterns:

Disc Emergencies

When is a herniated disc an emergency?

Go to the emergency room, not a chiropractor, if you have:

Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or leg weakness that is getting worse quickly. These can signal serious nerve compression that needs immediate medical attention. Everything else on this page assumes those signs are absent.

Natural Healing

Can a herniated disc heal without surgery?

Often, yes. Many herniations improve with conservative care over weeks to months as inflammation settles and the body resorbs some of the herniated material. That is why surgery is generally reserved for cases with the warning signs above, or cases where a fair trial of conservative care has not delivered. “Fair trial” is the operative phrase: conservative care is a plan with checkpoints, not an indefinite wait, and a good provider tells you when the plan is working and when it is not.

Conservative options include chiropractic care, non-surgical spinal decompression, SoftWave® therapy, activity modification, and time. The practice has also published a deeper look at chiropractic care for disc herniations if you want the longer read.

Pain Relief

How Hornback Chiropractic & Wellness treats herniated discs

It starts with an exam and a review of your history and imaging, because a herniation at L4-L5 with radiating leg pain is a different problem from a cervical herniation with arm symptoms, and neither should be treated off a generic playbook. Depending on findings, your plan can include chiropractic adjustment and non-surgical spinal decompression using the Kennedy Decompression protocol, with table positioning and parameters matched to your specific herniation.

Decompression sessions run up to 15 minutes and are available at all three offices: Lakewood Ranch, Waterside serving Sarasota, and North River in Palmetto.

No outcome promises here

Response varies from patient to patient. What the practice commits to is a careful evaluation, a plan matched to your specific herniation, checkpoints along the way, and a plain conversation if the plan needs to change.

Frequently asked questions

Many do improve with conservative care over weeks to months. Surgery is generally considered when warning signs are present or a fair trial of conservative care has not delivered. Your exam and imaging determine which path fits your case.
Commonly back or neck pain plus radiating pain, numbness, or tingling into a leg or arm, often worse with sitting, bending, or coughing. Some herniations cause no symptoms at all.
Loss of bladder or bowel control, groin or inner-thigh numbness, or rapidly worsening leg weakness. Those go to the emergency room immediately.
Exam and imaging review first, then a plan that can include chiropractic adjustment, Kennedy protocol spinal decompression with sessions up to 15 minutes, and SoftWave® (shockwave) therapy where tendon or ligament involvement calls for it, at any of the three offices.
