Whiplash Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Whiplash is the neck injury left behind when the head is whipped rapidly backward and forward, most often in a rear-end collision. The motion strains the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine, and in some cases irritates the discs.
Two things about whiplash routinely surprise people: symptoms commonly build over the days after the crash rather than at the scene, and the size of the dent in the bumper says little about the size of the injury in the neck. Hornback Chiropractic & Wellness evaluates and treats whiplash at all three of its offices across Sarasota and Manatee County.
How It Feels
What does whiplash feel like?
- Neck pain and stiffness, often worst in the first days after the collision
- A neck that will not turn fully, especially when checking blind spots
- Headaches, frequently starting at the base of the skull
- Pain or tightness spreading into the shoulders or upper back
- In some cases, tingling into the arm when a cervical disc is involved
If you searched this page because you feel fine after a crash, that is worth a sentence of its own: feeling fine at the scene is common and proves very little. The body’s stress response masks pain, and the inflammation behind whiplash develops over hours and days. A prompt evaluation catches the injury early and creates a clear, dated record connecting it to the accident.
Emergency Signs
When is post-crash neck pain an emergency?
Seek emergency care first for
Neck pain after a significant impact, severe or rapidly worsening pain, weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, problems with balance or coordination, or any loss of consciousness during the crash. Everything else on this page assumes serious injury has been ruled out.
Our Process
How is whiplash treated at Hornback Chiropractic & Wellness?
The evaluation comes first: the story of the collision, an exam of the neck’s movement and the surrounding structures, and a discussion of imaging if your findings call for it. From there, care is matched to what the exam actually shows. Joint restriction and muscle strain patterns are typically addressed with chiropractic adjustment and a plan of care with checkpoints. Where a cervical disc is involved, non-surgical spinal decompression may be part of the plan, and SoftWave® therapy may be added where ligament or soft-tissue injury calls for it. Progress is reviewed as care proceeds, and the plan changes if your results are not following.
If your whiplash came from a car accident
Call and mention the visit is accident-related. Auto injury visits are booked as their own appointment type, and your evaluation, findings, and care are documented thoroughly. The practice’s auto injury pages for Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, and Palmetto cover what to expect at that visit.
